Annecy is the kind of place that feels almost too perfect: a jewel of a town where alpine peaks tumble straight into a lake so clear it looks unreal. Think pastel houses, flower-lined canals, morning markets full of local cheeses, and long swims followed by apéritifs on sun-drenched terraces. It’s both quietly elegant and wonderfully outdoorsy: cycle around the lake, take a boat out at golden hour, then disappear into the old town for the best tartiflette you’ve ever had. Annecy is French charm with a crisp mountain edge, and one of those destinations you’ll want to keep coming back to.

At the heart of Annecy lies its turquoise-toned lake, with a shoreline looping around 40 km of surrounding mountains. The water changes colour with the seasons, reflecting the light depending on the time of day. Paddleboards, pedal boats and kayaks take to the water, while designated swimming areas provide easy access for a wildly refreshing cold dip. The Annecy le Vieux ponton, is one of the prime spots to watch the sun go down, swim from the wooden jetty, before a drink from the terrace of Le Bel Abri.
