Once the summer playground of New York’s city dwellers, the Catskills still know how to play host, only now the mountain hideaways come with natural wine, wood-fired pizza and a healthy dose of creative spirit.

how to get there
Fly to New York City or Newark and hire a car. The drive generally takes around two to four hours, depending on your destination and traffic. Albany Airport is another option for the northern Catskills. Coaches serve selected towns from New York City, but a car makes exploring much easier.

nice to know
Choose your base carefully. The Catskills cover a vast area, and places that look close on a map can be a winding drive apart. September and October are ideal for autumn colours; January and February are best for skiing. December makes for a cosy winter escape, though snow isn’t guaranteed. Download maps before you head out. Mobile reception can be patchy.
