Only accessible by car, bike or bus, Lauenensee’s twin lakes sit above the valley in beautifully striking contrast to the pastureland below. Looping trails trace both basins, shifting between open views and shaded forest, with benches for well‐earned breaks. Summer brings paddling and picnics, while winter quiets the area into snowshoe terrain.

A short drive above the village, Wildhorn is a staple address with a strong cheese focus. Fondue draws people in, served simply with traditional accoutrements, but their crispy schnitzel and soups are equally good. The dining room’s wood tables and valley‐ facing windows create a warm atmosphere. The vibe is quietly busy for being one of the region’s oldest guesthouses, with diners regularly sipping crisp Swiss Pinot Gris at tables for hours.

A serious two‐hour hike leads to this classic mountain hut, where wooden interiors and sunny terraces welcome tired legs. Tables are set for plates of Käseschnitte and Hobelkäse (local cheese‐focused dishes) and cold beers, with hikers taking a break before heading back onto surrounding trails. The climb is no stroll, but the payoff is delicious food, wide views and the support of fellow walkers refuelling mid‐route too.

In the village of Feutersoey, just south of Gstaad, this century-old Swiss favourite has been carefully reinvigorated by couple, Sabine Köll and Simon Richard. They bring with them experience from Gstaad’s most respected kitchens – creating a rustic dining room and garden terrace that feels wonderfully alpine. The restaurant’s near-legendary trout – served meunière or gently poached with potatoes and spinach – remains the reason most tables are booked well ahead.
