Taverna Oikonomou is everything and more: what began as a kitchen with four tables in Yiannis Oikonomou's family home (serving only one-pot wonders, and one pan fried cod dish) is now arguably one of the hottest spots to go to for traditional Greek cuisine. From the vibe, the food, the hosts; everything is truly perfect.

Combining a smart listening bar vibe with nostalgic Greek dishes cooked over fire, the joint project of four Greek friends – a food journalist, a chef, a baritone and a wine connoisseur – it has since been awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand. Packed every night of the week, DJs play vinyl behind the bar counter (the most coveted seats), while plates such as horta (wild greens) with manouri cheese, risotto-like trachana and paidakia (lamb chops) are served. All fuelled by homegrown natural wines, including Pet Nats.  

Pharaoh brings the modern dining experience to the historic city of Athens; with a carefully curated vinyl playlist, natural wines, and an ultra-chic interior - the log piles nodding to their wood-fired cooking techniques. Though the menu is on constant rotation, the staple dish has to be the keftedakia with a side of dolmadakia. It's simply dreamy!

Go up Philopappos to stretch your legs and see some great views while you do. A popular place for a promenade among Athenians as it offers great vistas of the Acropolis, the whole city of Athens and the Aegean Sea.

Whilst we can't resist a browse of Philos's concept store, we also can't resist popping down to the lovely bistro on the ground floor of this former antique shop. For a humbly good avocado on toast doused with olive oil, look no further. 

Plyta in Pagrati has quickly established itself as a favourite for Sunday lunch. A slick space with an open, stainless-steel kitchen, it is imagined as a neo-kafenio by the two chefs who are behind Akra, alongside two more, Periklis Koskinas and Marios Korovesis, from the renowned Cookavaya. Set on a square, it is honest and simple, a true neighbourhood joint. 

Attentive service, enchanting atmosphere and delectable food: Radka has it all. This mysterious (no instagram or website) restaurant is the place to be in Kolonaki. 

Coffee lovers, we're here for you. Redd Coffee is the place to head for your morning wake-up call. They do it all, from the sourcing, roasting, and brewing: the coffee is just exceptional.
