In the heart of the valley southeast of Boonville, Pennyroyal Farm is a regenerative vineyard, dairy and creamery where everything is grown, raised or made on-site. Goats and sheep graze across the vineyard; their milk becomes fresh and aged cheeses. Estate wines – from pinot and sauvignon to rosé – are produced from the same land. The tasting room invites visitors in for tours, cheese plates, wine pours and farm fare, all with a focus on sustainability and craft. 

A stylish, retro-inspired dispensary in Philo, The Bohemian Chemist feels more apothecary than shop. You can browse locally grown cannabis, artisanal products, and vintage glassware in this space that transports you with its 1920s glamour. 

Just outside Boonville, The Apple Farm feels timeless: rows of heritage apple trees, a rambling garden, and the gentle rhythm of farm life. You’ll find homemade cider, jams, and cosy spots to wander and linger beneath the orchard canopy. It’s a slower, softer side of Anderson Valley – perfect if you want to drift beyond the wineries. 

Scattered across rolling vineyards are monumental sculptures by Ai Weiwei, Doug Aitken, Louise Bourgeois, Yayoi Kusama, and other global names – one of the largest private sculpture collections in the world. Wine is poured as you explore the art-filled landscape. The experience blends sensory worlds – vineyard, architecture, and contemporary art – into a rare kind of cultural immersion in wine country. 

A charming shack by an oyster farm, perfect for a late lunch. Slurp briny, sweet oysters – served ice-cold or bourbon-butter grilled – alongside bay views and salty air.

One of the most thoughtfully curated art bookshops in the US, Arcana has occupied its Culver City space since 1984. The stock spans photography, architecture, film, design, and fine art – heavy on rare and out-of-print titles you won’t find elsewhere. The kind of place you plan to spend 20 minutes in and resurface two hours later. 

A bookshop and archive run out of an architecture office on Melrose, ARCHITECTURE stocks a tightly edited selection of architecture, design, and art titles alongside an archive of rare material that’s no longer printed. A quiet, focused space that rewards a slow browse. 

Rudolph Schindler built this house in 1922 as a live-work experiment – open-plan, indoor-outdoor, and entirely ahead of its time. Now managed by the MAK Center, it functions as both a historic landmark and an active contemporary art and architecture programme. Small, unhurried, and one of the most important buildings in Los Angeles.

Renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright masterminded Hollyhock House in 1921 for oil heiress Aline Barnsdall – his first LA commission and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Named for Barnsdall’s favourite flower, whose abstract form appears throughout the design, the house sits atop a gentle hill in Barnsdall Park with wide views over Hollywood. Guided tours run regularly; booking ahead is recommended. 

A neighbourhood all-day café on Sunset in Los Feliz, Alltime keeps things simple and does them well – good coffee, seasonal breakfast plates, and a relaxed room that doesn’t try too hard. A solid base before a day of architecture and galleries. 

A tiny, no-frills bagel shop next door to SQUIRL that has quietly become one of the most talked about bakeries in the city. The bagels are Montreal-style – hand-rolled, boiled, and baked – with a short, well-considered menu of schmears and toppings. Arrive early; they sell out.
