The RA’s patchwork submission-based show has been going since 1769 and is wonderfully accessible. Yet the big focus on the exhibitions means a lot of people don’t know that Michelangelo’s Taddei Tondo (the artist’s only marble sculpture in Britain) is in the permanent collection. The Tate Britain on Millbank houses the world’s greatest collection of Turners – probably the UK’s best-loved artist. It’s also home to the annual Turner Prize. Prepare to spend a few hours gawking at all its treasures.

This two-storey restaurant, which spotlights Sichuan flavours, is just outside the official boundaries of London’s Chinatown. Representing a region famous for bright red broths and mouth-numbing dried-chilli concoctions, it’s somewhere for people who enjoy their rice with next-level spice. It’s also somewhere to stick to the specialities: sea bass in sizzling chilli oil or pork dan dan noodles.

The Bloomsbury sibling of north London favourite Xi’an Impression lacks a little of the original’s atmosphere. But as an after-work supper or quick lunch spot that you don’t need to book, it’s the place to come for some of the best hand-pulled biang biang noodles in the city.

Inside three knocked together 18th-century cottages on Blacklands Terrace is the marvellous John Sandoe Books. It’s proudly independent, and its quarterly catalogue is packed with the best recommendations in the literary world. But there are also beautiful botanical books, architectural tomes, pretty prints and notelets. Plus, a picturesque window seat upstairs near the paperbacks, which makes a lovely browsing perch.

This simple restaurant is one of the most wonderful places in town for crispy roast duck and authentic dim sum. It doesn’t take bookings, so it’s best to arrive before the queue forms – an hour’s wait isn’t unusual at 1pm – for the handmade soup dumplings and prawn-filled tofu-skin rolls. 

When you're so close to the sea, it is only natural to crave seafood. The Rocket Store is the place to go; scribbled on the small blackboard menu, the dishes change daily depending on the catch of the day. 

With views over Porthleven harbour, come rain or shine the view is always picturesque at Kota Kai. Sip on a cocktail or two (the Kai mojito is always a go-to on a summer's day), tuck in to some great grub, and idle away the afternoon taking in the true Cornish landscapes. Idyllic!
