No trip to Fife is complete without a visit to Cambo. Whether you come with you golf clubs in tow, or your wellies at the ready, our ideal day is to wander in the woodland, have a dip at Cambo Sands, before heading for lunch at Stables Café. You never know what could be served at this vegetarian hotspot, it depends wholly on what Gillian Veal picks from the garden that day. 

Inside The Mercat, you'll find a café and shop rolled into one beautifully restored, tiled space from the same team as The Dundonald a few doors down. The smell of toasted sourdough and whipped-up lentil soup meets the sight of curated homewares, from Sabre Paris cutlery to beeswax candles. On the menu, there’s everything from sharp Isle of Mull cheddar toasties and apple-and-walnut salads to sourdough baguettes with house pickles and Earl-Grey fruit scones – plus jars of artisan jams and natural wine that are just begging to come home (or further north) with you.

This fun little stop is where you can meet Honey, Hamish Dubh, and Holly – the resident Highland cows – fluffy fringe and all. The café (named after Hamish the Highland bull) serves up wholesome plates to keep you going on the road, while the shop is packed with Scottish classics such as Harris Tweed and Lochmere Cashmere for any last-minute souvenirs.
