Founded in 1901 inside a former public library, Whitechapel Gallery hosted early exhibitions by Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Frida Kahlo. These days, shows are rooted in the area’s rich immigrant history and often focus on the refugee experience, with a commitment to displaying under- represented, under-served artists. An important London gallery with a contemporary exhibition programme in the same league as the Tate and the Serpentine.
