Bar Schiemond emerged from its café counterpart, paying homage to its dock worker roots and fast becoming Rotterdam's life and soul. Albeit, the pre-work booze has been swapped for natural vines and a fully seasonal menu. Pumpkin is lathered with a beurre blank, raddichio complemented by a creamy tahini jus and plates of grilled fish served with a potato mousse. Though, if the menu sounds sophisticated it's in no ways fussy: the red, tarpaulin covers stretch across the terrace, the inside remains simple with beige tiles and black leather bar stools and a disco ball becomes the centerpiece. Cozy, no nonsense, affordable. But above all, jolly well exceptional.
