A 'healing farm' cradled in the Franschhoek mountains just north of Cape Town, has something you cannot buy: soul. But it isn’t just the AD-worthy interiors, the lush gardens and the blissful spa that makes a stay here so fulfilling. It is the refreshing take on hospitality, unscripted and devoid of formalities, that makes Sterrekopje stand out. It is the breakfasts of just-foraged fruits and homegrown honey shared with strangers in the shade of olive trees.

Rooted in seasonal Overberg produce and relaxed vineyard hospitality, The Kitchen Door at Gabriëlskloof is a wood-fired, farm-to-table restaurant in the Bot River Valley. Led by chef Jen Ward, the menu leans into honest, unfussy cooking – biltong-spiced sirloin with burrata, fire-roast chicken with rosemary buttermilk, and smoked potato gnocchi with charred broccoli – best enjoyed with a glass of the estate’s wine, under the olive trees or by the fire.
Translating to “sanctuary” in Afrikaans, Toevlug lives up to its name as a calm, vineyard-framed restaurant on Annandale Wine Estate. Led by chefs Bertus Basson and Drikus Brink, it centres on seasonal, produce-driven South African cooking – generous, comforting plates best ordered to share. It’s also well suited to families, thanks to the wide lawn and playground nestled between the trees, where children can roam while adults linger at the table.
