Naturally, one of the biggest reasons the trek to Tokyo is well worth it is the food. While you can definitely get great Japanese food outside of Japan (think Paris, LA and New York), we think there's just nothing quite like what you can get on the ground. Tokyo truly is a culinary wonderland, a paradise for foodies - offering an ocean of options and unique takes on classic dishes.
Sure, you can be a true nomad and wander the streets of Tokyo in search of the best of the best (don’t get us wrong, we love doing this too), but for those who need a little guidance or are on a tight schedule, we’re here to help. Join us as we delve into the flavours of Tokyo, exploring the best establishments for the big four: ramen, tonkatsu, sushi and tempura!

1. Tempura: Mikawa Zezankyo (Meguro)
To begin your feasting journey, we’re sending you to a pretty phenomenal place where you can indulge in crisp, golden tempura. There is nothing quite like the delicate crust as it shatters between your teeth, and chef Hiroshi Shimada of Mikawa Zezankyo has honed the craft like no other. The restaurant has been around for over thirty years and is arguably the best in Tokyo. The traditional atmosphere and warm, personal attention from the chef feels so genuine. The ideal place to dip a toe into the tastes of Tokyo.

2. Ramen: Tsuta
Ramen enthusiasts, rejoice! Tokyo boasts myriad exceptional ramen joints, making it difficult to pick just one as our fave. However, Michelin stars don’t lie, so we suggest making your way over to Tsuta in Toshima. Known for their refined flavours and immaculate attention to detail, the joy of that first slurp at Tsuta is like no other.

3. Tonkatsu: Butagumi
Our next stop for our very hungry friends is Butagumi, a hallowed tonkatsu restaurant in the heart of Tokyo. Butagami is all things traditional, quaint and exceptionally delicious. Their menu is extensive, spotlighting every last rib, thigh and trotter the pigs have to offer. The chefs here use only the finest local ingredients, so everything (even the pickles!) are really top-notch.

4. Sushi: Sushi Saito
No culinary journey in Tokyo is complete without the best, freshest sushi. So, last but certainly not least, our go-to sushi spot: Sushi Saito! Chef Saito is known by locals as The Sushi God of Tokyo, and we certainly can't argue with that.
The buttery, tender slices of sashimi, the subtle flavours of the vinegared rice and the delicate brush of soy sauce - need we say more?
Note: It’s important to check the latest information regarding operating hours, reservation policies and any other considerations for these establishments before visiting, as they may be subject to changes or have specific requirements!
