Having won the Byens Bedste bakery, there's not a time of day when berta doesn't have a queue filing out of its great, glass door. Whether it be the classic bmo morning run to the more adventurous grovbirkes (a sesame and flax-covered malt and wheat pastry), these doughy delights never disappoint. The seasonal sweet treats make for an exceptional afternoon pick-me-up; when the creme fraiche, mascarpone and olive oil topped lemon cake is on the menu run, don't walk. 

Kiosk, café, kitchen, and bottle shop: Nabo is the Aarhusian's local hangout in Frederiksbjerg, a village-like district with a 'know-everyone' atmosphere and a commune isolated from the central city by the rail tracks. Nabo is conveniently located at the top of the market-hosting boulevard making it the perfect refuel and charge stop. Market days or not, Nabo rarely is seen without a queue, so be prepared to share tables, brush shoulders, and join those perching on the pavement outside. Order a cheese-filled toast (the breakfast menu also includes the classic cereal, Frosties, and milk), grab some candy for later, and borrow some pétanque balls for a round or two. 

Lige Om Hjørnet is an Aarhus staple. When the sun is shining, cadge a stool on the street-spilling terrace and settle-in for an all-day type of hangout. A classic Danish breakfast arrives with thick wedges of freshly baked sourdough, ice-cream is scooped at served at its basement Is Bar and natural wine is dolled out as soon as the lunch-time frenzy begins. What is more, you're in prime position for the Ingerslevs Boulevard flea market. 

In Aarhus's creative playground, Institut for (X) is Rasmus Poulsgaard's sourdough bakery and "gluten snack shop", Blød & Sprød. Order from a small open window ledge that opens onto a bountiful spread of sesame-topped buns, cinnamon snegler and slabs of olive oil-soaked focaccia. Take a BMO, lathered with whipped brown butter and a wedge of cheese, and take a pew at one of the many benches.
