Kiosk, café, kitchen, and bottle shop: Nabo is the Aarhusian's local hangout in Frederiksbjerg, a village-like district with a 'know-everyone' atmosphere and a commune isolated from the central city by the rail tracks. Nabo is conveniently located at the top of the market-hosting boulevard making it the perfect refuel and charge stop. Market days or not, Nabo rarely is seen without a queue, so be prepared to share tables, brush shoulders, and join those perching on the pavement outside. Order a cheese-filled toast (the breakfast menu also includes the classic cereal, Frosties, and milk), grab some candy for later, and borrow some pétanque balls for a round or two. 

Manda is the casual cantine, breakfast club hangout and long-table supper event space defining the Aarhus foodie game. Hot honey toasts, a chia oat bowl served with baked rhubarb compote and caramelized banana to Turkish eggs doused in a hot chili oil; this is the breakfast of breakfasts. Take a pew on the morning sun-drenched terrace out front for the ultimate people watching and, when the afternoon hits, order aperitifs for the courtyard in the back. 

Lige Om Hjørnet is an Aarhus staple. When the sun is shining, cadge a stool on the street-spilling terrace and settle-in for an all-day type of hangout. A classic Danish breakfast arrives with thick wedges of freshly baked sourdough, ice-cream is scooped at served at its basement Is Bar and natural wine is dolled out as soon as the lunch-time frenzy begins. What is more, you're in prime position for the Ingerslevs Boulevard flea market. 

A bakery founded in 2018 by five friends is now one of Aarhus's gloried bread houses with two locations. There's the smaller, fresher café and the original bakehouse at Sydhavnen (The South Harbour), the latter being our favourite to spot the bakers in action. Jumbo's seasonal rotation of glutinous snacks are as adventurous as they are delicious. There's shortcrust pear and hazelnut frangipane and cloud-like Berliners bursting with jam to the more traditional, Danish cardamon buns.
