Follow the gravel trail from Utö to Rävstavik Bay, paved by forest and woodland for an easier hike, or set out on the more scenic 10km loop around the northern tip of the island. Fishing villages, pastures, and lakes lead to Stora Sandvik before continuing to the rocky Rävstavik Bay. It’s here that the island boasts the best cliffs for jumping into the chilly Baltic Sea.   

The entirety of Ålö is a nature reserve connected to the larger island of Utö by a small bridge and a five-kilometre hiking trail that passes through the island’s military training ground and ends at Stora Sand beach. This white, sandy stretch is often deserted in off-peak season but becomes a popular hangout for friends and family on the longer, summer days. Find the locals grilling hot dogs on the public BBQs and swimming in the clear water bay.   

What started as a sourdough hobby project turned into a permanent address in Amsterdam’s Dappermarkt. And it's fast becoming Oost’s neighbourhood baker. Expect shaking legs, a serious endorphin rush, and the smug satisfaction of having earned your next pastry.

If you're looking for a workout with a little more substance, K/C Move is your place. Founded by former dancer and movement specialist Margherita Bencini, this boutique studio swaps fitness fads for a science-backed approach that combines Pilates, functional training, and biomechanics. The focus here isn't on lifting heavier or sweating more, but on moving smarter. You'll leave feeling stronger, more aligned, and perhaps just a little smug about your posture.

Hidden inside the industrial NDSM Loods, Bakkerij Sollinger serves some of Amsterdam's most beloved organic sourdough, making the trip across the IJ entirely worthwhile. Using local and organic ingredients – the flour is sourced from Zandhaas and vegetables are harvested from the Beemster – the daily bakes range from marmelade-flavoured brioche to crusty rye boules. 

If there is such a thing as a perfect neighbourhood café, Café De Linden comes remarkably close. Don't come expecting elaborate dishes or fancy cocktails. Instead, you'll find toasties, good wine, and lots of friendly faces.

Patmos is the island where Saint John is traditionally believed to have written the Book of Revelation after receiving his visions in the Cave of the Apocalypse. The monastery dedicated to the disciple was founded in the late 10th century and is now a Unesco heritage site. Clustered around its fortified walls is the enchanting medieval village of Chorá – a maze of whitewashed houses, winding alleys, and hidden courtyards. 

After a rocky hike from Diakofti beach – the last available parking spot – to the island’s southwestern side, the trail gives way to golden, grainy sand in the bay of Psili Ammos. Due to its remoteness, it remains on of the most peacefully pituresque beaches on the island with no sun parasols or chairs to rent and just a small scattering of Tamarisk salt cedar trees. There is a small summer-operating taverna in the bay, which is ideal for a a beach lunch. If the hike sounds challenging, hop on a boat from Skala port. 

For some of the best views across Patmos head to Profitis Ilias. This tiny chapel is found on top of a hill in the south-western part of Patmos, a relatively easy hike from Chora. Coincide your walk with sunset for some of the most magnificent skies.
