Mrs. Whaley's Garden
South of Broad
activity
culture
Open on most Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons - or 'by happenstance', in typical Charleston fashion - Mrs. Whaley's garden is a charming private garden designed by Loutrel W. Briggs in 1942. Mrs. Emily Whaley, who commissioned the garden all those years ago, wrote a captivating memoir,
Mrs. Whaley and Her Charleston Garden,
that is still in print today.
Stoll's Alley
South of Broad
culture
This teeny-tiny little street is one of the shortest and narrowest in Charleston. It also happens to be one of the most charming. Tucked away just off High Battery, Stoll's Alley is worth a quick pit-stop.
Sorelle
The French Quarter
dinner
Southern Italy meets the American South at Sorelle. This sprawling, two-story restaurant lives a thousand lives in one building: market, pizza counter, spritz bar and elegant dining dining room. Just think of it as Charleston's very own Eataly. But much, much better.
Gaulart & Maliclet
Slightly North of Broad
lunch
dinner
breakfast
Say "Gaulart & Maliclet" to almost any Charlestonian, and you might be met with a raised eyebrow or two. But mention Fast & French, and it's all knowing smiles. This narrow, energetic cafe has been a lunchtime staple for locals for decades if not necessarily for the food (it's solid and accessible) but for the friendly service and charm.
