A cuppa a day, no matter the time, the weather, or the occasion is key to English living. Top it off with bacon, fried egg bap or a chips and baked bean medley and you've got a brekky that tops it all.
1950s French cuisine is reinvented at this becoming spot in Borough Market. Foodies rejoice! Cosy, traditional, yet unwaveringly hip, Camille may be the spot for natural vino and an ever-changing chalkboard menu but it is also rustling up some jolly tasty food. From smoked eel devilled eggs, to confit wet garlic, tomato & brightwell ash, to whole John Dory & cockles (Biarritz style), Camille knows how to do it.
Probably London’s most famous market, this 13th-century food hall is a mish-mash of greengrocers, fishmongers and spice traders alongside salt-beef and falafel stalls. Those shopping for produce should prioritise oysters from Richard Haward’s (which goes back seven generations), British cheese from Neal’s Yard and giant sugar-dusted amaretti from baking school Bread Ahead. For lunch, head to the street- food hub, with its amphitheatre-like tiered seating, for cod tacos from Padre. Always busy but charming too.
Nicknamed London’s local theatre, this Waterloo not-for-profit is probably the most accessible arts space in London. The audience is 60 per cent first-time visitors but that doesn’t mean the plays aren’t hard-hitting. This is where Judi Dench, Michael Gambon and Maggie Smith first made their names. Laurence Olivier led the original National Theatre Company here and there is still a brilliantly academic team in charge of the programming – a show at The Old Vic is often deeply moving.
The bread is a must-order here. Both the Wildfarmed laffa (a pillowy middle-eastern flatbread glistening with butter) and the acma verde, which looks like a bagel but is delicately infused with garlic and parsley. Then, of course, there are the wonderful dips to pair them with: a salt cod labneh, a tahini with hot honey and crispy chickpeas, and a creamy tarama topped with pickled cucumber. There’s also tuna ceviche and torched mackerel and lamb cooked on an open grill. A polished Greek restaurant from the team behind Manteca.
