If the period details, wallpapers and fringed cushions across its 23 individually styled rooms aren’t enough to convince you to book a night or two at Rothay Manor Hotel, perhaps Rowan, the hotel’s award-winning restaurant, will. Expect seasonal dishes made with local produce, best enjoyed after a day wandering the Lakes.

Behind the same team as The Old Stamp House, The Schelly serves local flavours without the faff and fuss of typical fine dining in its 30-seat restaurant. Named after the rare freshwater fish found in Haweswater, Red Tarn, Ullswater and Brothers Water, the menu aptly has a seafood-heavy focus. Baked scallops are topped with nduja butter and seaweed butter, sea bream ceviche is nicely spiced with horseradish, and torched mackerel is served alongside fresh ajo blanco and cucumber. Order a few dishes to share, then finish with the blackberry frangipane.
