Forget white-tablecloth theatrics. At Lake Road Kitchen, James Cross lets the ingredients do the talking, drawing on a career spent at Noma, Per Se and La Pergola to create tasting menus that are quietly brilliant rather than showy. You might even find yourself inspecting every hedgerow on tomorrow's walk, wondering what he would've done with it.

Behind the same team as The Old Stamp House, The Schelly serves local flavours without the faff and fuss of typical fine dining in its 30-seat restaurant. Named after the rare freshwater fish found in Haweswater, Red Tarn, Ullswater and Brothers Water, the menu aptly has a seafood-heavy focus. Baked scallops are topped with nduja butter and seaweed butter, sea bream ceviche is nicely spiced with horseradish, and torched mackerel is served alongside fresh ajo blanco and cucumber. Order a few dishes to share, then finish with the blackberry frangipane.
