Inside this towering neo baroque building constructed for the 1929 World Exhibition are the vast galleries of the National Catalan Art Museum. Showcasing Catalan art from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century, the Romanesque frescoes and Modernisme furniture are both particularly impressive. Not many people know about the rooftop here (the access is hidden right at the back of the huge gallery) but it offers 360 views of the city, often enjoyed alone. 

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich’s design for the German national pavilion at the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition held on Montjuïc became an iconic example of architecture from this period around the world. So much so, the glass, steel and stone pavilion was recreated in 1986 on the same Montjuïc site. Today it’s a tranquil space to have a nosy at and admire the stunning use of materials and form.  

The Spanish bank Caixa has an impressive collection of over 800 works of modern and contemporary art on display in spaces across Spain and the Caixa Forum in Barcelona is one of the biggest. Housed in a former Modernista brick building, alongside the permanent collection, there’s an interesting line-up of temporary exhibitions, many of which partner with big name galleries from across the globe as well as packed cultural events agenda. 

Half way up Montjuïc, this bright and spacious modern Mediterranean-style building designed by Spanish architect Josep Lluís Sert and friend of Miró is a serene place to spend a few hours and an ideal backdrop for the Barcelona-born artist’s work. Keep an eye out for the regular temporary exhibitions showcasing different artists connected to Miró – plus, don’t miss the rooftop with panoramic views across the city and a number of Miró’s playful sculptures.
