Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich’s design for the German national pavilion at the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition held on Montjuïc became an iconic example of architecture from this period around the world. So much so, the glass, steel and stone pavilion was recreated in 1986 on the same Montjuïc site. Today it’s a tranquil space to have a nosy at and admire the stunning use of materials and form.  

Inside this towering neo baroque building constructed for the 1929 World Exhibition are the vast galleries of the National Catalan Art Museum. Showcasing Catalan art from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century, the Romanesque frescoes and Modernisme furniture are both particularly impressive. Not many people know about the rooftop here (the access is hidden right at the back of the huge gallery) but it offers 360 views of the city, often enjoyed alone. 

The reward for climbing to the top of Montjuïc is this peaceful sprawling botanical garden that creates a journey across the world showcasing the weird and wonderful plants that grow there. The impressive collection of Bonsai trees is particularly spectacular. For weekend trips, visit on a Sunday – it’s free after 3pm each Sunday or all day on the first Sunday of the month.  

At this cultural association meets vinyl record shop in the heart of the neighborhood of Poble Sec, there’s a regular program of events with live DJs from Barcelona and beyond playing jazz, funk, soul, R&B, hip hop, electronic and more. The twice monthly live streaming events from RBL, a local community radio project with outposts also in Berlin and Turin, are always a good time to stop by.
