Teetering on the sheer cliffs between Conca dei Marini and Amalfi, this 17th-century convent has traded its austere origins for some of the Costiera’s most iconic hotels. The 20 rooms are converted from cells – vaulted ceilings and window nooks give them away – while the terraced gardens, where nuns once meditated, now frame what might be the platonic ideal of an infinity pool, merging sky,sea and swimmable lengths.

The Costiera hadn’t seen anything quite like this when Borgo Santandrea opened in 2022. Floor-to-ceiling windows, mid-century design pieces from the owner’s private collection, a lift plunging through the cliff to the sandy beach below – it’s a jaw-dropping conversion of a 1960s modernist villa, suspended nearly 80 metres above the sea. Brave the 344 steps via the saltwater pool or take the cliff-cut lift down to swim and snack on pizza by the sea.

In the late 1960s, Umberto Lauritano converted a tuna-net storage house – the tonnara – on the beach of Conca dei Marini into a restaurant. Jackie Kennedy spent long summer days here in 1962, and her favourite pasta – spaghetti with courgettes and small cuts of speck – is still on the menu as Spaghetti alla Jacqueline. Reach it by the restaurant’s hop-on boat shuttle from Amalfi.

Buy a ticket and head down to Grotta dello Smeraldo for a look at the beautiful cave and insane waters. Head here early to avoid crowds.
