Monastery of St. John

On the west of the island is The Monastery of Ai-Yiannis. Two hours on foot from the harbour or just a 15-minute drive, you'll want to take a trip here, even if just to romanticise the peace and quiet of the magnificent pebbled courtyard. If you happen to be in Halki on the 29th of August, the place becomes a bustle of activity and festivities.

Trachia Beach

Just over the brow of the hill from Horio is a peninsula that gives way to surrounding Trachia Beach. Though the adventurous may want to hike here, hop on one the island's boats for a more relaxing experience. Stop by 'The Cave of Seals' or go snorkelling in the underwater reef.

The gold-star adorned ceiling, white Byzantine architecture and pebbled courtyard mark this tiny, deserted monastery as something special. Located just above the abandoned village of Horio, this is the spot for the best sunset in town.

A dramatic rock cliff gives way to this incredible pebble beach. Though the 5-kilometre walk from Emborio seems endless, the swim at Areta is worth the hike.
