A dramatic rock cliff gives way to this incredible pebble beach. Though the 5-kilometre walk from Emborio seems endless, the swim at Areta is worth the hike.
A white pebble beach, crystal-clear waters and the gentle hum of crickets are the soundtrack of Halki's Kania Beach. A 45-minute walk past the local honey maker, a farm, and Black Sea's vegetable patch, leads you to one of the most idyllic beaches on the island, and also one of the best tavernas. Otherwise, a 10-minute boat service coordinated by Garifalia and her family connects the main port to the beachside jetty. Stay for the day, and make sure to have lunch from the kitchen. What began as a tiny shack, still serves generous loads of bbq-smoked eggplant salads, fish – specialities like Fagri or Barbouni – fresh from the grill, and crispy courgette croquettes.
Built in 1861, the Church of Agios Nikolaos is the protector of the island and boasts the highest bell tower in the Dodecanese. If you think the exterior is astonishing, wait until you step inside.
Chances are you may not just stumble across this jewellery store-cum-souvenir hotspot; to say it's tucked away is an understatement. Though you can find the usual fridge magnets and paper weights, what Queen of Halki does best is jewellery crafted from stones and natural materials from the island.
When in Greece! A gyros is essential. Ever-so fluffy pita delicately wrapped around pork, chicken or halloumi and topped with lashings of garlicky-tzatziki and greek salad. An easy meal, yes. But a delicious one, most definitely.
