When Sushi Saeki closed in Osaka, the foodies were beyond disbelief. Much to our great relief Hisorshi Saeki has re-opened his iconic sushi place though this time in Kyoto. Look out onto the sweeping greenery of the gardens, dine on some of the finest food, and sip on a glass or two of sake and white wine.

Sprawling and intricate, this Edo Period castle feels quintessentially Japanese. Arrive here just after opening or shortly before closing and don't miss the excellent Ninomaru Palace Garden.

common. is a minimalist café focused on careful brewing and a calm atmosphere. The menu changes regularly, with drip coffees highlighting different regions and processes, alongside espresso-based options. The counter is the best place to sit if space allows. We love their espresso tonics, and cheesecake or hazelnut cornbread cake for a not-to-sweet afternoon treat. Late afternoon tends to be quieter, making it an ideal time to stop in.

At Ace Hotel Kyoto, a former 1920s telephone exchange has been cleverly reworked by Japanese architect extraordinaire, Kengo Kuma. The feel is design-forward but grounded – wood, light and craft running through generous rooms and lively shared spaces. It’s as much a social hub as a hotel, with standout dining, a rooftop scene and Kyoto’s first Stumptown Coffee Roasters.
