It’s hard to get a table at this iconic restaurant, praised among India’s best. Paying homage to the Parsi cafés made famous in the city – a bit like a certain chain that’s done rather well across London, and the UK – the food here puts a modern twist on stone-cold Bombay classics, including purple tikki chaat, raan pot pies and a blinding coffee rasgulla sundae. Go with a big group – and an elasticated waistband.

When it comes to affordable – and delicious – street food, Mumbai doesn’t mess around. Swati Snacks is reliable for many: tourists in the know; vegetarians; Mumbaikars of all ages and wealth brackets (even a certain Mr. Ambani). There is no meat or fish on the menu here. The  Tardeo Road outpost is considered the best by those in the know – part-location, part-nostalgia – but they can be found all over the city. Cash only.
