South Luangwa National Park
in Zambia

The walking safari was invented here, and South Luangwa has never stopped being one of the best places in Africa to do it. On foot, at ground level, with a guide who knows the bush the way most people know their own street, the experience of African wildlife shifts entirely. The Luangwa valley is a natural funnel: the river oxbows concentrate game as the dry season tightens, drawing lion, leopard, elephant, and the comically abundant hippo into an ever-smaller corridor of water and shade. Leopard sightings here are among the most reliable on the continent. The night drives are exceptional. The camps, many of them small and owner-run, understand exactly what they are doing.
