We're always grateful to have our gloobles friends but never more so than when we're in need of a few recommendations, a little advice. While many of our team are into art (with a few art history grads amongst us), we're just not quiiiite well versed enough to know exactly which art fairs are worth the time and which are better left to the other artseholes.
Luckily, some of our coolest, artsiest friends spared a few minutes to give us the lowdown, to spill all the juicy details on their favourite fairs of the year. Between them, they've been to just about every fair imaginable - from Hong Kong to Miami, from Paris to LA.
This is by no means comprehensive. And not objective in the slightest! But, seeing as we trust Freddy Insinger (a contemporary collector), Sophie Beeftink (an art consultant at Wildenstein London), Carlota Dochao Naveira (co-founder of VIV Arts), Dominic Lynch (a marketing manager at Christie's) and Saskia Hubert (an artist's liaison at Gagosian) in all aspects of life, well, we might as well trust them on this.

TEFAF Maastricht takes place in March in the, shall we say, Burgundian south of the Netherlands, and Sophie finds it seriously charming. This fair is definitely more serious than some, and, in fact, it's actually a bit of a destination fair, as cringe as that may sound. It brings together a really wonderful, eclectic mix of art, from old masters to ancient artefacts and contemporary works. The fair's strict vetting process ensures everything is super high quality, and, of course, just really beautiful.

Not strictly an art fair, no, but this bi-annual art and architecture event is one that's captivated Freddy and Dominic for ages. Contemporary artists can showcase their work in a global context—all set against the stunning backdrop of one of Europe's most beautiful cities. "The far-reaching themes of the curators do not overshadow world-class talent, new and established," says Dominic. If you can swing it, we highly recommend going for the vernissage, as this is when the best, most serious art folk turn out. Looking for something a bit chiller? Pop over toward the end of the Biennale in November. Crowds will be thinner and hotel prices most certainly cheaper (yay!).

Younger and a bit less elevated than Art Basel Basel (which takes place at the same time), Liste Art Fair is a treasure trove of pieces from emerging artists. Saskia likes that you can come here without pretense and find something accessible if you're just beginning to collect. Never fear, however, as it's not all newcomers here; you can also find many stellar mid-career artists here who're showing at Basel too. So, you know you're getting the good stuff.

Sophie, Carlota, Freddy and Saskia all say that Basel is their favourite fair by far. Every year in June, the OG-fair (in Basel, not Miami!) takes place, putting the most high-end art you'll find in private hands on display. It centres on contemporary and modern art, attracting the crème de la crème of galleries (think heavy hitters like Pace, Hauser + Wirth and Pace), who always bring their most impressive pieces. Art Basel is pretty competitive, but it's also a really fun fair. Everyone vies for guest list spots at Gagosian's yearly party at Les Trois Rois, and you can see major dealers hunched over fresh wurst at a cart parked outside the fair. Plus, there's just something magical about being in Switzerland. The air is fresh. Everything works. And gallerinas and collectors can all be spotted toddling down to the Rhine for a pre-fair plunge. "Basel is just a beautiful place to visit in the summer," notes Saskia.

Although as a collector Freddy's at home at just about every fair, he notes that Frieze London is one of the best for newcomers and casual art lovers. The city's vibrant art and design scene can be explored beyond the fair's walls, which is a huge plus for anyone intimidated by a week spent inside the booths at Regent's Park. Dip between Frieze London and Frieze Masters for the perfect mix of classic and contemporary. Interested in emerging or new-wave art like Carlota and Saskia? Frieze (the Focus section in particular) is definitely the place to be.

Art Basel strikes again with their sister fair in an arguably fairer city (let's have the Parisians and Baselers duke it out). At this autumnal fair in the city of light, everyone brings their A game, and that's exactly what draws Dominic to Paris+. Americans prefer travelling to Paris over Basel, and it's an easy route for those coming from London. And, as with some of the other big city fairs, there's just SO much life happening beyond the walls of the exhibition hall - how can you argue with Paris at your doorstep? High calibre art and accessibility make it a no-brainer.

There are pro fairs and there are party fairs, and we hold firm that there's a place for every type in your calendar. Like many other people shimmying through the art world, Carlota and Freddy like to bookend his year in art with a good (read: playful, fun and easy) fair. Enter: Art Basel Miami. This beachside event is bustling, and the energy is booming. It's great if you're dragging along someone more interested in people-watching than art-ogling. The digitally-inclined will also rejoice, as Miami sees an incredible convergence of classic art and NFTs during the week.
