Arrive at Tikal before sunrise and the jungle does the rest. Howler monkeys, parrots and the odd coatimundi move through the trees as the mist lifts off the canopy and the temple tops appear above it. This is one of the great Maya sites and it earns every superlative. Beyond Tikal, the region is largely untouched rainforest, best explored slowly and with good guides.
