When you're ready to escape the polish of South of Broad and most of the peninsula it's time to head to the best soul food restaurant in Charleston. Bertha's Kitchen serves up meat and three from a sweet little spot in a thriving neighbourhood.

This cosy, intimate spot just outside the main drag of downtown Charleston is the best spot in town for omakase-style sushi. Chef Chris Schoedler is a certified sake advisor, so we recommend doing a little tasting alongside your omakase instead of (or in addition to!) wine.

While it's not traditional Carolina-style BBQ, Lewis Barbecue is pretty damn delicious. Think of it as a more millennial take on the cult classic Southern cuisine.

In a town where many people are drinking after 5:00 PM but few places beyond the supermarket are still selling wine, Monarch Wine Merchants is a welcome saviour. The incredibly knowledgable staff will guide you in picking out the perfect bottle.
