Mills House is pretty in pink. The current building, a 1970s replica of the original 1863 hotel, houses 210 simple yet pristine rooms, plus a killer courtyard pool. If you just so happen to be nursing a hangover and bristle at the thought of stepping out into the southern sunshine, Lowcountry classics like she-crab soup and local shrimp with Carolina gold rice are just a bell away.

Housed in a gorgeous Beaux Arts building on Meeting Street, the Gibbes Museum of Art just so happens to be the city’s only (and deeply beloved) art museum. We love the permanent collection – particularly the inimitable catalogue of miniatures – but we always make time for an extra visit when there’s a special exhibition.
