Baja California
in Mexico

Baja California is best understood from behind a steering wheel. Highway 1 threads through desert, vineyards and fishing villages from Tijuana all the way to Cabo San Lucas, with the Pacific on one side and the Sea of Cortez on the other. The Valle de Guadalupe has quietly become one of Mexico's most exciting wine and food destinations. Todos Santos, Loreto and Mulegé each earn a stop. The further south you drive, the better it gets.

Todos Santos

An hour north of Cabo along the Pacific coast of Baja California Sur, Todos Santos is what happens when artists, surfers, and farmers share the same small town and nobody is in a particular hurry. The streets are lined with colonial-era buildings that now house galleries, restaurants, and mezcal bars of surprising quality. The beach breaks nearby are serious, the whale-watching offshore between January and March is exceptional, and the surrounding desert, with its forests of cardon cactus, is unlike anything on the mainland. It remains, for now, pleasingly under the radar.
