Las Terrenas has cobbled streets, a French bakery, and a beach long enough to feel genuinely private. In February, the Samaná peninsula fills with humpback whales. The best of it sits well outside the all-inclusive resorts. Come with a car, a loose plan, and an appetite.

Punta Cana

Punta Cana makes no apologies for what it is: white sand, warm water, and a rum cocktail arriving before you have even settled into the sunlounger. The beaches along the Coconut Coast are genuinely among the finest in the Caribbean, and the all-inclusive resorts do what they do very well. Venture beyond the hotel strip though and there is more to find: Altos de Chavón up in the hills, the fishing village of Bayahibe, and local food that puts the buffet to shame. Come for the sea, stay a little longer than you planned.
