LA-born Larry Gagosian is one of the biggest gallerists in the world – with not one but three spaces in Mayfair alone. There’s a charming gallery-bookshop inside Burlington Arcade that’s worth checking out, but it’s the double-height Grosvenor Hill spot that tends to show the most interesting works – from Willem de Kooning to Damien Hirst and Takashi Murakami.

Sadie Coles was managing Jeff Koons’s New York studio when she was encouraged by artist Sarah Lucas to set up her own space. Her 1997 inaugural show featured the YBA and now Coles runs three London galleries. This Soho spot is a bright, open-plan space that champions emerging talent such as the traditional modernist painting of Caribbean-American Alvaro Barrington and moving image installations by Diego Marcon. A much-admired gallerist with a great roster of names.

After Christie’s and Sotheby’s, Phillips is the London auction house to know – and the only one with an exclusive focus on the contemporary field. The soaring space on Berkeley Square is fantastic, and leading the charge in the photography lots are Diane Arbus’s Identical Twins and Andreas Gursky’s eerie landscapes.
