An authentic Amsterdam experience consists of a visit to a coffeeshop, and no, we don’t mean the latte art, dash of pumpkin spice kind.

Boerejongens, literally translated to ‘farmer boys’, is an experience of its own kind. Not into this sort of stuff? We still recommend a visit, as the interior reminds us of a 20th century pharmacy/doctor's office. It’s not everyday you see a coffeeshop with marble floors!

We don’t know who lit the fire, but Amsterdam has massively stepped up its culinary game over the last few years, boasting a slew of new Michelin-starred restaurants. One of our absolute darlings of this new crew is De Juwelier, a warm, fine-dining spot laid out over two floors on the Utrechtsestraat. While we love popping in whatever the season, we think De Juwelier is a particular gem in winter, as the menu leans heavily toward offal and other rich dishes.

De Juwelier, Bistro de la Mer’s sister restaurant, may have landed itself a Michelin star, but we might venture to say we like Bistro de la Mer even better. Hey, hey, we said might. As you might imagine, seafood is the star here, and shine it does at this chef's counter spot (we recommend going with no more than 3 other diners). Oysters, coquille and red mullet become transcendent in the hands of Bistro de la Mer’s seasoned chefs.
