For years Andermatt was the Swiss resort that serious skiers knew about and nobody else did: a high valley at 1444 metres, exceptional off-piste terrain on the Gemsstock, and a village that had preserved its stone-built character while the bigger resorts were busy reinventing themselves. Then a significant development project arrived, and the result is one of the more interesting transformations in Alpine skiing. The new hotels and restaurants have raised the standard considerably without, quite remarkably, dismantling what made the place worth coming to in the first place. The Ski Andermatt Sedrun domain now links the valley to Sedrun and Disentis for over 180 kilometres of piste. The Gemsstock remains the best reason to come, and the village in summer, with the Gotthard pass road above it, is exceptional cycling country.
