Among Cagliari’s many Neapolitan-style pizzerias, Maiori is the one we keep coming back to. Tucked into the courtyard of Palazzo Doglio, its white-stucco interiors and organic shapes make a polished setting for Chef Emanuele Riemma’s distinctly Campanian-meets-Sardinian pizzas. Our tip? Order the one topped with pizzutello yellow tomatoes and Sardinian dried sausage, then finish with the rum-soaked babà for a little taste of the Amalfi Coast.

We could fill books with Cagliari’s great pizza spots, but Civico 8 has been a firm favourite since opening in 2016. From the team behind beloved Corso Dodici, this buzzy spot overlooking the boats in the harbour and the porticoes of Via Roma was an early champion of the city’s gourmet-pizza movement, turning out wonderfully fluffy bases piled with seasonal ingredients. For something properly local, order the Carlofortina, a nod to nearby San Pietro island’s Ligurian heritage, topped with fresh tuna, freshly ground pesto and gloriously juicy cherry tomatoes.

Similarly to its beachside outpost, Antica Cagliari serves a refined take on traditional Sardinian cuisine, where seasonality and subtle innovation take centre stage. Grab a table outside in the heart of the charming Marina district and settle in for generous plates of seafood fregula. And if they're on the menu, don't miss the culurgiones served with carbonara sauce and crispy guanciale

Thin, crispy pizzas come topped with everything from Gorgonzola and Sardinian sausage to sliced rosemary potatoes, while vintage-inspired interiors and old Italian tunes spinning on vinyl set the mood. From the owners of beloved Caffè Svizzero and Bacàn, Rimanino is the laid-back pizzabar locals come to for an easygoing evening over a few slices and a drink – and, as they say, when in Rome… or rather, Cagliari.
