Located in Chora’s oldest quarter, this 211-square-metre house dates partly to the seventeenth century, with stone arches and ceilings woven from local astivi cane. Island-born designer Leda Athanasopoulou added bold colour, bespoke lighting and a few clever touches, while keeping the original floors, cement tiles and antique shutters intact. One master and two double bedrooms sleep four to six, with four outdoor spaces to choose from – including a sunset-facing front terrace and another overlooking Prophet Elias Monastery.

Patmos is the island where Saint John is traditionally believed to have written the Book of Revelation after receiving his visions in the Cave of the Apocalypse. The monastery dedicated to the disciple was founded in the late 10th century and is now a Unesco heritage site. Clustered around its fortified walls is the enchanting medieval village of Chorá – a maze of whitewashed houses, winding alleys, and hidden courtyards. 

Knock on the blue door below the Monastery, and you'll find Katerina Mourati at work. Her atelier is filled with expressive painting, delicate embroidery, sculpture, handmade jewellery and artworks that have earned a cult following far beyond Patmos, and she's often there to welcome visitors herself. You can also spot her curation of works in guesthouses around Patmos, her silk-paper artworks are displayed at Leda Space, while her painted wooden castings adorn the walls of Pagostas. 

For a taste of Patmos classics, this family-run taverna is difficult to contend with. Generations-old recipes are the heart of the kitchen, and the menu has barely changed. Order a selection of dishes to share – grilled octopus, golden zucchini balls, and fragrant rice-stuffed dolmades – and watch the sun set over Skala.
